detail

Fritz Nagel, son of the furniture manufacturer A. Nagel, studied architecture from 1903 to 1906 under Josef Hoffmann at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts in Vienna.
This rare piece of furniture is characterised by high quality in its finish and functional details. On the top are two lockable secret compartments, the side fronts open behind narrow doors to create storage spaces. The sculptural decor of the glass fronts is removable. The full intermediate surfaces accentuate sculptural plinth carvings and a surrounding leaf relief finishes towards the top. This bookcase is one of two that were commissioned for a private villa.

It is signed on the back with the original company metal label:
MÖBELFABRIK A. NAGEL : WIEN IX : PORZELLANGASSE 27, LIECHTENSTEINSTR. 38a
